  • Anti-aliasing:
    • 1x2: Sample image at double the resolution in the Y-direction only and then downsample (e.g 800x1200 downsampled to 800x600). This anti-aliases near-horizontal lines only; vertical edges are not affected.
    • 2x1: Same as 1x2, but on opposite axes. Not as good-looking as 1x2; horizontal lines are more plentiful and edge crawling is generally more noticable on horizontal edges than vertical ones.
    • 2x2: Oversample at double the resolution in both X- and Y-directions, then downsample.
    • OG: Ordered Grid
    • RG: Rotated Grid
    • MS: Multi-Sample
    • SS: Super Sample
    • Gamma: Card supports Gamma-correct blending, which produces a very smooth edge gradient.
  • Trilinear filtering on the Voodoo5 cannot be used while multi-texturing.
  • The Radeon 8500 uses some flavor of dual bilinear instead of trilinear filtering.
  • The Radeon 8500, 9100, and 9200 use an adaptive anisotropic filtering method rather than always using a fixed number of samples. And they do bilinear filtering instead of trilinear when aniso is enabled. There are also "32", "64", and "128" settings for OpenGL aniso; not sure exactly what they do, but they are different from the 16 sample and lower settings [B3D Thread].
  • In Quality mode the Radeon 8500, 9100, and 9200 use an OGSS solution that jitters at the sub-pixel level (rather than jittering the vertices themselves like the V5's RGSS) [B3D Thread]. Performance mode is a series of OGSS modes [B3D Article]. My guesstimates:

  • Some off-brand (non ATI) Radeon 8500LE and 9100 cards have their memory clocked as low as 166MHz. Normally it runs at 250MHz, a significant difference.
  • The 'Performance' Aniso mode on the Radeon 9500/9600/9700/9800 chips is similar to the one on the Radeon 8500, and can only do bilinear filtering when aniso is enabled. 'Quality' mode is slightly slower, but can do trilinear with aniso. Anisotropic filtering on the 9500/9600/9700/9800 is not negatively affected by planes at ~45° like the Radeon 8500 is.
  • Some off-brand (non ATI) Radeon 9600 Pro cards may come with memory cloked at 200MHz rather than the normal 300MHz.
  • The Matrox Parhelia is limited to using bilinear when doing 16-sample anisotropic filtering. It can do 8-sample aniso with trilinear. But unfortunately the drivers currently limit anisotropic filtering to 2 samples.
  • The Matrox Parhelia does something called Fragment AA, which is a 16xOGSS AA, but it picks out and samples only the edges of objects.
  • Some Geforce 2 MX cards run at 143/143 or 166/166 rather than the "standard" 175/166.
  • Some Geforce 2 MX400 cards run at 200/175 rather than the "standard" 200/166.
  • On the GeForce 2 you can set a high MIP-Map level or low MIP-Map level in combination with the chosen FSAA level. This simply adjusts the LOD to give a better resulting image; it's not specifically an FSAA thing [B3D Article]. The "2.25x" FSAA sampling method (1.5x1.5 oversample by 50% in both directions) is only found in certain driver revs.
  • Geforce3 chips have three "mystery" FSAA modes (4, 5, and 6) for D3D [B3D Thread]. And one extra 4xOGMS plus 9-tap filter for OpenGL.
    • Mode 1: 2xRGMS
    • Mode 2: 2xRGMS plus 5-tap filter (aka Quincunx)
    • Mode 3: 4xOGMS
    • Mode 4: 2xRGMS plus 9-tap filter
    • Mode 5: 2xRGMS plus 1x2OGSS
    • Mode 6: 2xRGMS plus 1x2OGSS plus 9-tap filter (aka 4xS)
  • The 4xS mode on the GeForce 4 appears to be 2xRGMS combined with 1x2OGSS plus 9-tap filter.
  • Geforce3 and Geforce4 chips now have two more modes that have been revealed in drivers [B3D Thread].
    • Mode 6: 2xRGMS plus 1.5x2OGSS (aka 6xS)
    • Mode 7: 2xRGMS plus 2x2OGSS (aka 8xS)
  • Clock speeds for the Geforce4 Ti4200 can vary significantly from one manufacturer to the next.
  • The Geforce4 Ti4800SE is the same as the Ti4600 except that it is clocked lower and supports AGP 8x.
  • Like the Radeon 9700 the GeForce FX can opt to take fewer samples when doing anisotropic filtering to achieve greater speeds while losing very little visual quality.
  • On the Geforce FX "2xRGMS" and Quincunx ("2xRGMS+5") are done differently than on previous chips; they mostly utilize a post filter to show AA effects.
  • The new 6xS and 8xS on the Geforce FX are different than the 6xS and 8xS modes on the GF3/4 chips. The older modes can be enabled with third party utilities [B3D Thread].
    • 4x: 4xOGMS
    • 6x: 4xOGMS plus 1.5x1OGSS
    • 8x: 4xOGMS plus 2x1OGSS
    • 6xS: 2xRGMS plus 1.5x2OGSS

  • Drivers for the GeForce FX chips starting at rev. 52.10 greatly reduce trilinear and anisotropic filtering quality. These 'optimizations' appear not to affect older chips (e.g. GeForce4 and below) [3D Center Article].
  • FSAA on the S3 DeltaChrome chips maxes out at 1024x768.
  • The SiS Xabre 80 may be paired with 64-bit DDR or 128-bit SDRAM memory.
  • Trilinear filtering on the Xabre 400 and 600 only seems to be available at 640x480 and lower.
  • On the Xabre 400 and 600 chips, 3xFSAA and 4xFSAA modes appear to be the same setting. And 2x mode is some sort of blur filter.
