Notes:

  • µ - micron (millionth of a meter).
  • The dates listed are official introduction dates. It does not necessarily mean those processors were available in quantity on that date. Processor names that are italicized in green indicate a tenative release date based on various news articles, speculation, and sometimes pure rumor.
  • The prices listed with each processor are its price at the chip's introduction in US dollars. Except for the OverDrive chips, all prices are for quantities of 1000.
  • The Pentium II Deschutes core had a 5% die shrink starting around the end of August 1998 with the 6-5-2 step chips.
  • Pentium OverDrive processors have a set 2.5x multiplier. The Pentium OverDrives 180 MMX and 200 MMX have a set 3.0x multiplier. Not all Socket 5 motherboards will accept a Pentium OverDrive with MMX. See Socket Requirements for 200MHz OverDrive. And check the OverDrive Index for information on system compatibility.
  • The K5 CPUs have unusual multipliers (1.5, 1.75, and 2.0). Setting the mb to 1.5x or 2.0x will give you 1.5x, 2.5x is interpreted as 1.75x, and 3.0x is interpreted as 2.0x. Different models, however, will have different multipliers available. Model 0 has 1.5x and 2.0x multipliers. Model 1 has 1.5x only. Model 2 has 1.5x and 1.75x. Model 3 has 1.5x, 1.75x, and 2.0x. The K5 chip is Pentium-Rated. The name is not necessarily indicative of the speed the chip runs at.
  • The Cyrix 6x86 only has 2.0x and 3.0x multipliers. It is also Pentium-Rated, and its actual clock speed is not reflected in its name.
  • The Cyrix 6x86MX (M2) is Pentium-Rated, and its actual clock speed is not reflected in its name.
  • The IDT (Centaur) C6 does not have fractional multipliers. The normal 2.5x setting is defined as 'reserved', and the 1.5x setting is interpreted by the chip as 4.0x. When BF2 is added to the motherboard, the typical settings for 4.5x and 5.5x are 'reserved'. 4.0x and 5.0x are unchanged.
  • The Cyrix MediaGXm, despite coming in a 320-pin SPGA package, is not pin-compatible with Socket 5 or Socket 7 motherboards. It requires its own special motherboard and chipset.
  • 233Mhz (66x3.5) chips utilize the 1.5x multiplier as 3.5x on Socket 7 boards that do not have a jumper for 3.5x. Newer motherboards, on the other hand, will add a third jumper (BF2) to take care of higher clock multipliers.
  • Newer chips that use a 4.0x multiplier or higher will require a Socket 7 motherboard that has a third multiplier jumper. Unlike using the '1.5x' setting as '3.5x', setting a motherboard to '2.0x' won't produce a '4.0x' multiplier in the chip.
  • Except for chips with on-Die L2 cache, the L2 cache on a Slot 1 compatible processor runs at only half the core processor speed. Slot 2 processors have full-speed L2 cache and larger size caches (1MB, 2MB).
  • The Pentium II Klamath chips come as either ECC (error detection/correction) or non-ECC for the L2 cache. Which the CPU has is determined by its S-Spec number. See the Pentium II Quick Ref Guide.
  • The Coppermine-128 Celeron uses the same core die as the Coppermine Pentium III, but with half the on-Die L2 cache disabled. The 1MB/2MB Cascades Pentium III Xeon chips also share the same core. The Celeron also uses a slightly different pinout than the previous Celeron chip, and is incompatible with older PGA-370 boards.
  • The Celeron 500A may not actually exist. Engineering samples do exist, and the chip was given two sSpec numbers (SL3KZ and SL46R), but these references were removed from later Spec Updates. I don't know that the chip was actually released.
  • The Pentium III Coppermine chip (as well as the Celeron Coppermine-128 chip) comes in a variety of steppings: 6-8-1 (106mm² die), 6-8-3 (105mm² die), 6-8-6 (90mm² die), and 6-8-A (95mm² die). Most chips come in the FC-PGA package which has a different pinout than the old PGA-370 Celeron. But some also come in the new FC-PGA2 package. FC-PGA2 *only* denotes the new heat spreader; the pinout is the same as FC-PGA chips.
  • The VIA Cyrix-III chip underwent a core change (from Cyrix's Joshua core (aka Gobi aka Jedi) to IDT's Winchip-4 core (aka C7 (IDT designation) aka C5 (VIA designation) aka Samuel)) before the first Cyrix-III ever appeared.
  • Trinity Works no longer produces their P6x and P7x adapters. These adapters would fit an AMD K5 into Sockets 4 and 5 (respectively).
